Care tips

Mijena Ceramics handmade ceramic pieces are made from stoneware clay, that is sturdy and durable for everyday use, but does require care when using and cleaning.

All my ceramic pieces made to be used with food or drinks can be cleaned in the dishwasher or heated in microwave. Of course, hand washing is always the best option, and will ensure a long life for your favourite Mijena piece.

Bear in mind that corrosive detergents, softness of the water, using too much detergent, very hot water or very hard and sharp cleaning sponges as well as other factors beyond my control could lead to deterioration of the glazed (glass) surface.

Refrain from extreme temperature changes to avoid thermal shock (from extremely cold to extremely hot and vice versa). You can warm up your pots under warm tap water before pouring hot water into them. Boiling water should not be poured directly into your pieces.

As all my pieces are handmade they all have slight variations and they may appear different in real life than the ones pictured on the website if there are multiples available of the same item.

All ceramic pieces that have details made with real 22K gold shouldn’t be used in a dishwasher or a microwave, as the gold might fade.

My ceramic jewelry pieces are made from highest quality porcelain, some decorated with 22K real gold details. Gold I use comes in liquid form, not in leaves, so it has to be fired in the kiln. Therefor the porcelain pieces are fired 3 times ensuring the gold is implemented with the glaze.

Porcelain jewelry has either stainless steel, brass or 925 silver base (chain, hoop, etc.).

What is different than on the most porcelain jewerly you could see on the market is the fact that all my glazed earrings are glazed on both sides. Of course it's a bit tricky to fire them like that and there's a much higer chance I'll lose a couple of tiles because they easily stick to the sticks in the kiln. However, I like making them that way because not only are they much higer in quality but they also feel and look much better than when being fired only on one side. Also, the earrings having golden details have them on one side, and not on the other, leaving you the chance to wear them in two ways.

Pearls that I combine with my jewelry pieces are all freshwater pearls, not plastic ones.

It’s important to bear in mind that eventhough brass and silver are strong and durable materials they are also natural materials, thus change in their appearance during time may and will appear. This is not a sign of low quality material or craftmanship but something that is naturally developed over time, as a reaction to its environment. It’s a rather common process for a natural material to develop patina overtime, as a sort of protection metal does for itself.

925 (sterling) silver consists of silver (92.5% silver) and copper (7.5%), which gives it additional strength but also is the reason why silver becomes darker over time.

If you notice that your jewelry has lost its shine or that there’s a surface discoloration, it can easily be removed with warm water and soap (brass) or in combination of white vinegar, baking soda and hot water (silver).

Brass and silver, just like ceramics, have been used for thousands of years in human history, which is a great example of the quality and durability of these materials.

In recent years, brass has became a very popular material because of its colour that resembles gold but is a much more affordable option.

All jewelry pieces must be taken with special care - do not use any force that may damage it or that may result in loosing it’s form, shape, etc. That especially applies to ajustable rings and bracelets - bending the metal too often can lead to a more irregular shape and less flexibility, as the metal becomes even stiffer when bent and can break due to strong resistance.

It is recommended to avoid wearing the jewelry while sleeping, showering, exercising or using chemicals, applying lotion, sunscreen or perfume. Also, please avoid storing jewelry in a humid, warm room (i.e. bathroom). Avoid wearing and contact with chlorine, seawater, bleach, and chemicals.
